"I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown...But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit. Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the Lord...they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters..." vs. 2, 11-13
"Be shocked, be utterly desolate" - How did Christians become so complacent toward sin? Okay, maybe we're not complacent toward other people's sins, but we sure aren't shocked by our own. When we sin, we are turning our backs on the God of the Universe, the Almighty. The Almighty. We are spitting in the face of the King of Kings. How are we not appalled at our impertinence?
In sinning, we are trading glory for dirt. We are taking our love away from God and giving it to something else. "They have forsaken me" - Can't you hear the hurt in His voice? He has the right as the Righteous and Holy One to demand our allegiance, but He is also a loving God, and wants us to love Him in return. How are we not shocked that we don't love Him more?

Ouch. This is me, and I hate it. :( I didn't know I was on fire before, but now it's painfully obvious that I'm not. :( I miss my college days when I first came to believe and was excited and amazed about everything I learned from and about Him and wanted to keep getting to know Him. It's so easy to become complacent and so hard to change it! (and it's very humbling)
Have you read "The Holiness of God" by RC Sproul. He gets into this and disects the whole human-God relationship in relation to God's holiness. Really good book! (so far- I'm still reading it)
i haven't read it. you'll have to fill me in more when you're done!
We have let ourselves fall down such a slippery slope. That's why Leviticus and Deuteronomy stress over and over that God's people are not to look like the world.
