boys are so brave

today i was attacked by a mouse. well, not quite, but almost. i was innocently dishing vegetables onto plates at work, when i suddenly felt something fall on my head (no, not the mouse). the ceiling in the dining room sometimes leaks, so i looked up check it out. and there, looking back at me, was a little head and two little front feet. i jumped backwards with a huge gasp, certain i was having a heart attack. my coworkers looked at me like i was nuts, but then the cook looked up, and he saw it, too (and wondered if it was actually a rat). i went running to the front desk to report it, in the hopes that someone would come take care of it right away, but no one did, and actually they said they wouldn't expect someone to come til tomorrow. tomorrow?!
so for the rest of the day, i kept looking up, certain that it would find me and jump onto my head. finally the cook offered to put one of those sticky death tapes up into the ceiling for me. i told him that would be wonderful, and so he did. he waited until i was out of the kitchen, then closed the door and moved the ceiling tile to put the sticky thing up there. it was so nice of him.
thank heaven for boys.

dear snow,

ok. have your fun today. then please please go away!
love,
lucy

something that bothers me

i like strawberry milk. i don't have it all the time, but sometimes i just have to. at those times, amazingly, the orange tupperware cup is on top. thus i am having pink milk in an orange cup. yes, i know, i could take it off the stack, grab the brown one, use that, and put the orange one back, but that's too much work. i could also reach up a shelf and grab a glass glass. but again, too much work. and so i am forced to drink a beverage that clashes with my cup. and that is something that bothers me.

dear guy behind me at the wild game the other night,

it's ketchup. not catsup. for heaven's sake, you're at a sporting event, one in which you hope a fight breaks out. don't pretend to be all hoity-toity and say things like catsup. and if you actually are that hoity-toity, don't go to hockey games. instead, give your tickets to me.
thank you.

chick flicks redefined

on v-day, a few of us singles from my church got together to hang out. nothing too exciting, but something to do. at the end of the evening, when there were 5 of us left, we decided to stick in a movie. the two guys said that since it was valentine's day, they would dutifully watch a romantic movie for us girls. and so, we watched 'the dark knight.' it does have kissing after all.

from Jeremiah 2

"I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown...But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit. Be appalled, O heavens, at this, be shocked, be utterly desolate, says the Lord...they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters..." vs. 2, 11-13

"Be shocked, be utterly desolate" - How did Christians become so complacent toward sin? Okay, maybe we're not complacent toward other people's sins, but we sure aren't shocked by our own. When we sin, we are turning our backs on the God of the Universe, the Almighty. The Almighty. We are spitting in the face of the King of Kings. How are we not appalled at our impertinence?
In sinning, we are trading glory for dirt. We are taking our love away from God and giving it to something else. "They have forsaken me" - Can't you hear the hurt in His voice? He has the right as the Righteous and Holy One to demand our allegiance, but He is also a loving God, and wants us to love Him in return. How are we not shocked that we don't love Him more?

Jeremiah

For some reason, I decided recently to read the book of Jeremiah in my quiet times. No idea why, I just decided to. There's a lot of good stuff in it, lots of it convicting, lots of it loving. People tend to think of it either as prophesies of woe or as a plaque they got for their graduation with 29:11 on it. For me, however, it's showing God's greatness and how amazing it is that He loves us. I'm enjoying it immensely.

Movie Review: "Slumdog Millionaire"

Excellent movie.
It's about a teenager from the slums of India, Jamal, who goes on 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.' They can't believe that an uneducated 'slumdog' could know all the answers, so he's accused of cheating, and therefore fraud, and is hauled in to the police station and forced to explain how he knows them all. As he answers, you see the story of his life. It's an interesting concept for a movie.

The movie is well written and well acted. Some of the flashbacks are in Hindi, but it wasn't distracting. I think that adds to our understanding of where he came from. It shows that it's a completely different world from what we know here. Cultures are so bound up in language, and vice versa, that it would almost be wrong to have them in English. And yet it's made for an English-speaking audience, so I think the use of English in the present helps us to relate to him. (Sorry - I'm a language geek.)

I absolutely loved Jamal (played by Dev Patel). Not quite sure what the word is to describe him. He's not adorable, because that sounds too soft. But he's not heroic or dreamy either. He's everyday, but better than that. Hm...yeah, I think that's probably best.

The kids in the flashbacks are cute, the love of his life (Freida Pinto) is gorgeous and sweet, and the actor (Irrfan Khan) who played the cop interrogating him was very good. The only one I wasn't particularly thrilled with was his brother when they were grown up. But oh well. I got over it.

So anyway, I highly recommend this movie. I just hope I haven't oversold it.

i may be a little tired

i went to the superbowl party at my pastor's house. he made eggrolls, which is all fine and good, except that the room in which we all put our coats was right off the kitchen, leaving my jacket smelling (very strongly) like said food. but i got home late and get up early, so i didn't get a chance to wash it before wearing it to work on monday. after work, i stopped at the library to use the computer. to be nice to my fellow library patrons (who probably didn't want to smell an eggroll-y jacket), i decided i could run in from the parking lot without a jacket.
now, usually i put my keys in my jacket pocket when i stop at the library. however, this time i obviously couldn't, so i stuck them in my hoodie pocket. when i was all done, as i was driving home, i suddenly went into panic mode. did i leave my keys at the library? normally i put them in my jacket pocket, but this time i didn't, so did i just leave them next to the computer? i didn't put them in my pants pocket, considering that those pants don't have pockets. crap! where are they?!
oh.
